On the 13th day of war, under the command of Drona, the Kaurava forces formed the Chakravyuh - giant discus formation. It was so devastating that if left unchecked, there would be no Pandava army by sundown. The only ones who knew how to break this were Krishna and Arjuna, but they were distracted by another smaller group and hence couldn't help. Abhimanyu knew how to enter but not how to exit. Thus he charged in and lay waste to the soldiers and systematically defeated their warriors. It was then that everyone would attack Abhimanyu simultaneously disregarding the rules of combat engagement. Abhimanyu was slain on that day and it was a turning point in the war. Arjuna wrought with grief declared that he would slay Jayadhratha the following day. He does so with the help of Krishna. Then Drona is tricked into believing that his son Ashwathama is dead and thus gives up arms and meditates in sorrow. He is promptly slain. Meanwhile Bheema slays the 100 Kaurava brothers one by one. Karna who is actually the eldest Pandava brother begotten from the Sun God before Kunti's marriage is decapitated by Arjuna. Dusshasana has his chest torn open and his heart ripped off by Bheema, who washes the hair of Draupadi with the blood. Bheema and Duryodhana battle in the end and Bheema crushes Duryodhana's thighs and defeats him. Ashwathama angered by how his father was unjustly slain performs a night raid against the rules of war and finishes of the remaining Pandava forces including Draupadi's sons believing them to be the Pandavas themselves. The Pandavas win the war but at a great cost and with immense loss of life.
