about

18 days the battle raged. Conches would blow and war drums would blast the beat signifying the commencement of war. Dhrishtadyumna commanded the Pandava forces while Bheeshma commanded the Kaurava forces for the first 10 days, followed by Drona for the next five days, Karna the next two and Shalya on the last day. The battle was fierce with both sides sustaining heavy losses. It's said that 3 generations of men died on that battlefield. Grandsire Bheeshma was formidable and was the most experienced in battle and lay waste to the Pandava forces. On the 10th day Arjuna sent a volley of arrows that impaled Bheeshma and put him out of commission. As a mark of respect, the battle immediately stopped on the day before sundown and would commence the next day at sunrise with Drona in charge of the Kaurava forces.
